Protect your skin for your big day


Hot South African summers lend themselves to outdoor dining and lounging all of which can wreak havoc with your skin. Don’t just wait until you’re poolside before taking any action against the dangers of the sun, start each day prepared for the sun until it becomes almost second nature.


Wear Sunscreen Every Day

There’s no ifs or buts about this one, you simply must wear protection against the sun’s powerful rays, if you’re going to care for your skin you have to protect it. Most damage occurs from incidental exposure so make it a daily part of your beauty regime to apply sunscreen. Just walking to your car or driving in traffic exposes you sun damage so always make sure that your moisturiser contains a minimum of SPF 15 together with a sunblock. If you're out in the sun apply your sunscreen generously at least every two hours.

Drink Plenty of Water

Healthy looking skin needs hydrating and the best way to do this is by drinking plenty of water. Not only is water cheap but it flushes out the body and makes your skin look clear and glowing.

Eat Properly for Pretty Skin

If you eat food containing lots of anti oxidants you’ll be glowing inside and out. Foods like tomatoes, spinach, sweet berries and sweet potatoes are all rich in nutrients and help against ageing. If you’re prone to acne eliminate dairy food such as milk, cheese, frozen yoghurt, ice cream, and you’ll be amazed at how clear and healthy your skin appears. Another great tip is to take a dip in the ocean. The natural purifying properties of salt fight against the bacteria which causes acne.

Using Your Fridge as a Beauty Cellar

If you’ve overdone the sun and your skin is red rather than attractively tanned, try applying cold yoghurt to it instead of after sun lotions. The skin needs to breath to let out the heat and the yoghurt allows it to do so, whereas sun lotions trap the heat inside. The cold yoghurt removes the heat and acts as an anti inflammatory. Smooth it on to the skin, let it dry and wait for 15 minutes. Then rinse off. Apply every hour.

If you have the type of skin which tends to redden easily, you probably find that the constant summer heat keeps your skin looking blotchy and irritated. Try keeping your moisturisers in the fridge since they will cool your face down when applied and also help to lessen capillary dilation and reduce any visible redness.
