Switzerland Overview

Whether you're looking to relax and unwind after all the hectic planning or whether you're seeking plenty of adventure, Switzerland can combine both. With superb spa resorts at which to pamper yourselves and great mountain peaks to hike there's something for everyone. Why not stay in a stunning hotel or hire a private chalet and experience all that this lovely country has to offer.

Whether you're combining your wedding with a ski break or enjoying the Summer activities, one place you really must visit is the Schiltorn and Piz Gloria, which is a revolving restaurant that was the location for the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty's Secret Service”. You can have breakfast or lunch whilst admiring the stunning 360º panoramic view. If you're feeling particularly brave, you can actually step outside and walk around the edge of this gigantic mountain. With flights from South Africa taking little more than 14 hours, you won't have to wait too long to start your adventures. A trip to the area around Lake Geneva is very popular and ideal for nature lovers. There are also several cultural museums and archaeological sites in the area with Chillon Castle being one not to miss. If you're looking for a European country in which to get married that is full of stunning scenery, has diverse landscapes, and is full of lakes and glaciers, then why not consider Switzerland. With it's picture postcard good looks, you could have a winter wonderland wedding combined with a skiing honeymoon or you could have a Summer outdoor wedding followed by a hiking or cycling break. With plenty of churches, chapels, castles, or hotels in which to exchange your vows, weddings abroad in Switzerland are very popular. The country also has plenty of venues in which to host a reception, all offering awe inspiring scenic views and with so much to see and do, this is the ideal place for a honeymoon too.

Marriage Requirements

Switzerland only recognises civil ceremonies to be legally binding but these can be combined with a religious ceremony of your choice. A couple wishing to get married will need to have photo proof of ID, such as a passport or driver's licence, birth certificates, and an affidavit of their marital status. They will also need a completed marriage form. It can take around 5 weeks to get approval and for the bans to be published after which the wedding can take place after 10 days and within 3 months of the approval having been granted.
