A couple wishing to get married in Hong Kong have a choice of either a civil ceremony or a religious one, since both are legally binding. Whichever type of ceremony they want they will need to give a written notice of their intended marriage to the Marriage Registry and this must be done at least 17 days before the wedding date. Both parties will need to provide the following documents: ID (passports/ID cards), birth certificates, certificate of marital status, details of their current occupation and address, full names of both parents, and the necessary registration fee. If either one has been divorced or widowed, then papers to that effect also need including. Two witnesses are also required.
