Getting Married in France

Marriage Requirements


France only recognises civil marriages although you can still have a religious ceremony once you have a certificate for your civil marriage. In order to get married in France one of the couple must have lived in France for a minimum of 40 days prior to the civil marriage. A couple need to apply to the local maire or town hall for permission to get married and will need to produce certain documents before the banns are published. The documents are valid passports for both couples, full birth certificates and 2 proof of address documents, such as utility bills and rental agreements.
