Couples wanting to get married in Bulgaria need to know that only civil ceremonies are recognised as legally binding but they can still choose to have a religious ceremony as well. In addition one of the couple needs to be a Bulgarian citizen or needs to be a resident of Bulgaria (either short term or long term). Application to get married needs to be made at the local town hall at least 30 days before the date of the intended wedding. Documents needed include proof of identity, such as passports or ID cards and birth certificates, certificate of non impediment and medical certificates.
