Getting Married in Brazil

Marriage Requirements


The law only recognises civil ceremonies but these can be combined with a religious wedding too. A couple need to apply to get married at the Civil Registry Office at least 30 days before their intended marriage date and will have to complete a form as well as present certain documents. These include valid passports or ID cards and birth certificates, which must have been notarised by the Brazilian consulate of the issuing country. A declaration of civil status is also required. All documents must be translated into Portuguese and notarised. The wedding banns are published for 15 days after which a couple are free to marry.
