If you don’t know where to start with your bridal blooms then take a look at some of the most popular wedding flowers on offer. We listen to expert advice on wedding flowers from florists around South Africa and find out their views on some of their favourite wedding flowers.

Roses

We spoke to Renee at Bluebell Blooms as she tells us how roses are the perfect choice for a wedding:

“Roses are the Grace Kelly of flowers. They are an excellent choice for any bridal palette as they are available in a variety of colours and sizes, throughout the year. Before you choose your rose, be sure to enquire if there are any price changes which may affect your budget as some flowers are marked up around special occasions and seasons. Lastly try to use local roses, as they are used to our warmer African climate. Remember to have fun and feel free to mix them up with any of your other favourite flowers for your own unique look!”

Gerbera Daisies

Charlene from Oopsie Daisy Flower and Décor talks us through why brides should be choosing gerbera daisies as their flower of choice:

“The gerbera daisy is a very popular flower used at weddings because of its beautiful large blooms. I love the gerbera daisy as it always gives a sense of cheerfulness, with its traditional flower meaning being beauty and innocence. The fragile stature of the daisy flower was historically used by maidens and queens to decorate their hair. Maidens who wore daisies were known to be pure and untouched, awaiting a loving relationship. They come in a variety of colours and shades from bright pink, red, white, yellow, orange etc. and are available throughout the year.”

Orchids

Orchids are the perfect choice if you are looking for a bridal bloom that is fragrant and exotic, you need just a few orchids added to your bridal bouquet to make a statement. Orchids are also truly versatile; you can use them to create an elegant style or go for something more quirky by using long twisted grasses with just a few orchids dotted throughout the bouquet. Orchids can be an expensive choice of bridal flower, so having a statement bouquet with scattered orchids can help make the style more budget friendly.

Tulips

Susette from The Flower Cottage tells us how tulips are one of her most popular blooms:

“The tulip is one of the most sought after flowers for weddings. I use them for stylish, formal and modern weddings, as well as traditional and vintage occasions with great success. A tulip is so versatile; you can use it as a buttonhole, in arrangements, for a bridal bouquet and you do not need any filler, because the beauty lies in the simplicity of the flower. Tulips are available all year round, but will last longer in cold weather.”

Calla Lilies

A popular choice among brides, calla lilies are a great flower if you want a bold bridal bouquet.

Their sturdy stems make this bloom a great choice for bouquets and centrepieces as they will hold well throughout the whole day. You can choose to have a bouquet filled with just calla lilies or mix up this pretty flower with greenery and other beautiful blooms. You will also have a great choice of colours for your calla lily bouquet, from simple and elegant ivory through to stylish rusty oranges, even bright and vibrant purple.
