There is also a plethora of historical sites and museums to wander around, and the cosmopolitan city of Manama is a great place to sip a coffee and people watch.

With regular flights from South Africa, you could be exploring the vibrant city of Manama in just over 11 hours. For history buffs, there is a plethora of ancient sites to visit including the Riffa Fort built in 1812 and the Khamis Mosque which dates back to 692AD. There are also lots of interesting museums and colourful Souqs which are full of interesting shops selling all kinds of things, including gold and jewellery, and wonderful fabrics. Try your hand at pearl diving or take a boat trip and watch the dolphins playing. You can go to the races every Friday from October to March and entry is free, however betting is not allowed.
